The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences is an
international scientific society dedicated to improving operational
processes, decision-making, and management through the application of
methods from science and mathematics. It is the largest society in the
world for operations researchers, management scientists, and those working
in related fields within engineering and the information, decision,
mathematical, and social sciences.
The 12,000 members of INFORMS focus especially on analyzing and
improving performance, effectiveness, and productivity in operating
organizations - in business, the military, government, and elsewhere. Many
are engaged in developing better analytical methods. The members include
practitioners, researchers, educators, students, and executives. Over the
years, a number of INFORMS members have been awarded the Nobel Prize in
economics.
By offering a broad umbrella to those with similar analytic interests,
INFORMS unites analytical specialists working in separate functional
arenas such as production and operations management, finance, marketing,
information systems, and general executive policy. It also unites
analytical specialists working in different organizational sectors
including the military, manufacturing, airlines, financial services,
criminology and law enforcement, and governmental administration.
Research pioneers in operations research and the management sciences
have contributed importantly to the store of technical methods now
employed widely in engineering and science. Particularly well known are
contributions to applied mathematics, including contributions to
optimization, stochastic processes, simulation methods, and decision
theory.
INFORMS was established in January 1995 by merging the Operations
Research Society of America, founded in 1952, and The Institute of
Management Sciences, founded in 1953. |
