The Society of Actuaries is an educational, research, and professional
organization dedicated to serving the public and Society members. Its
mission is to advance actuarial knowledge and to enhance the ability of
actuaries to provide expert advice and relevant solutions for financial,
business, and societal problems involving uncertain future events.
Its members practice primarily in the areas of life insurance,
retirement systems, health benefits systems, and financial and investment
management. Most reside in North America, but a growing number live or
practice overseas. It was founded in 1979 by the merger of two predecessor
organizations. It is the largest actuarial organization in the world, with
an international membership of almost 17,000.
Membership is granted through a series of examinations related to
economic, business, finance and investments, pensions, insurance, interest
theory, contingencies, risk assessment and management, and modeling.
Successful completion of exams leads to two membership classifications:
Associate and Fellow.
It provides basic and continuing education and has a Code of
Professional Conduct. It conducts research to develop studies of
historical experience and techniques to project into the future, to
analyze the actuarial aspects of public policy issues and to expand the
profession.
