The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics was founded in 1952 to further the application of mathematics to industry and science, to promote basic research in mathematics leading to new techniques useful to industry and science, and to provide media for the exchange of information between mathematicians and other technical and scientific communities.

SIAM provides a unique bridge between mathematical theory and application. Its membership is comprised of applied mathematicians and computational scientists as well as scientists and engineers with an interest in applied mathematics and computing. Through conferences, meetings, workshops, publications and other activities, SIAM fosters the exchange of ideas and the transfer of science into product and process technology.
