National Summit on the Mathematical Education of Teachers:
Meeting the Demand for High Quality Mathematics Education in America

November 2 and 3, 2001, Tysons Corner Doubletree Hotel, Tysons Corner VA

Application Procedure and Forms

Who May Apply

Anyone with an interest and role in improving the mathematical education of teachers may apply, but applicants are encouraged to apply in teams of two to four persons.  Preference will be given to team applications over individual applications.  A team may consist of one to three persons from a mathematics department of a two- or four-year college or university (ideally including the department chair), along with possibly a faculty member from the school or department of education of the institution and/or a dean. Teams involving faculty from several institutions that work together (or intend to work together) on teacher education are especially welcomed, e.g. faculty from a two-year college along with faculty from a four-year college. This is not meant to be an exclusive description and more creative team groupings are welcome.

Selection of Participants

We expect more applications than the number of available spaces and we will strive for a good cross section of institutions (two-year, four-year, Masters, Ph.D., public, and  private). Thus we are unlikely to be able to invite all who apply.   Early applications will be given preference, but we will consider type of institution and type of team in making the selection.  All applications will receive a response within 10 days of receipt.

Fees

There will be a $100 registration fee per team.  This should not be sent until an an application is accepted and an invitation received.

Transportation, Meals, and Lodging

The National Summit will be held at the Tysons Corner Doubletree Hotel, 7801 Leesburgh Pike, Tysons Corner VA 22043.  The Tysons Corner Doubletree is in the Virginia suburbs of Washington DC, approximately equidistant (25 minutes, 12 miles) from the two Washington airports: Reagan National (DCA) and Dulles International (IAD). All participants are expected to pay their own transportation costs or seek support from their home institutions.

Dinner on the first day and breakfast and lunch on the second day of the National Summit are provided as part of the program.  Other meals are the responsibility of the participants.

We have reserved a block of rooms at a group rate of $79 plus 6.5% tax  per room, single or double occupancy. We expect to be able to pay the lodging costs for Friday night, November 2, for all participants who need and request such support.  All room reservations must be made through the application form.
