The American Mathematical Society was created to further mathematical research and scholarship. Founded in 1888, it has approximately 30,000 members, throughout the United States and around the world. It fulfills its mission with programs that promote mathematical research, increase the awareness of its value to society, and foster excellence in mathematics education.

The AMS provides many professional services to the community and is a major mathematics publisher, with offices in four locations. The headquarters office in Providence supports most publication and membership service activities with approximately 150 employees. A warehouse and printing facility is located in nearby Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Mathematical Reviews, a major reviewing journal of the Society, used by mathematicians around the world, is produced by the AMS office in Ann Arbor, Michigan using a staff of approximately 75 people. The Society also has a Washington office which supports matters of science and education policy and serves as a resource to many agencies and organizations in the Washington area.

Most recently, the AMS has been a leader in electronic publication. Since 1996, all journals of the Society have been available in electronic form over the web. Mathematical Reviews is available as “MathSciNet” and provides access to the mathematical literature from 1940 until the present.
