High School to College Mathematics Pathways: Preparing Students for the Future

May 5-7, 2019
Hyatt Regency Hotel, Reston VA

The Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS), in collaboration with its member societies and the Charles A. Dana Center, will be running a 3-day Forum to initiate state-based collaborations between the mathematics leadership for K-12 education and that of the higher education system.

The Forum will be built around 20 to 30 state-based teams, each team drawing on the state’s department of education, the flagship university and higher education system, and the two-year college system, as well as state leaders who have been engaged in efforts to improve mathematics education at either the high school or college level. It will bring together teams from the participating states to learn from the experiences of other states engaged in these bridging initiatives; to get acquainted with the recommendations, programs, and supports from the CBMS member societies including NCTM, NCSM, ASSM, AMATYC, MAA, AMS, SIAM, and ASA; and to plan their own course of action.

The Forum will particularly highlight the new Launch Years initiative of the Dana Center, which by then will be working intensively with a few states to modernize high school mathematics. Launch Years will build on the progress made by the math standards movement and respond to the changing higher education and workforce landscape, while working to resolve potential threats to equity and attending to constraints on school capacity for implementation.

There will be ongoing logistical and networking support for at least the next eighteen months as the state teams work to articulate and implement their action plan.

We anticipate financial support for this effort from

The National Science Foundation

The Carnegie Corporation of New York

The Teagle Foundation
